How the treatment runs
What happens at each stage.
Whitening takes one or two visits. Veneers and crowns take two to four visits across two to six weeks. Where braces or aligners are needed first, the makeover follows the alignment rather than hiding it.

Planning
Photographs, shade matching and the digital preview. Nothing is prepared at this visit. You agree the shape, the length and the shade before any tooth is touched.
Preparation
Enamel is prepared where veneers or crowns are planned, a scan or impression is taken, and temporaries are fitted. Treat the temporaries as a rehearsal and tell us what you want changed while they are still on.
Fitting
The porcelain is tried in before it is bonded. Shape, shade and the way the teeth meet are checked with you holding a mirror, adjusted, and only then bonded permanently.
Settling in
Gums settle around the new margins over two to three weeks. Cold sensitivity for a few days after preparation is normal and fades as the tooth calms down.
Call us if a temporary comes off, if a new restoration feels high when you bite, or if sensitivity is climbing rather than fading after two weeks. A bite that is even a fraction high will make the tooth ache and will eventually chip the porcelain, and it takes minutes to adjust.

Crowns are the fourth option and cover the whole tooth rather than the front of it, which is what a heavily filled, cracked or root treated tooth needs. Where crowding or the bite is the real problem, braces or aligners come first, because moving a tooth into line preserves far more of it than reshaping it with porcelain.

A smile makeover suits people who are unhappy with discoloured, chipped, worn, uneven or gappy front teeth. Healthy gums are needed first, and veneers need enough sound enamel to bond to. If crowding or a bite problem is the main issue, a period of braces or aligners usually comes first so the cosmetic work is done on well-positioned teeth. People who grind their teeth are advised to wear a night guard to protect the new restorations.
A digital preview takes your photographs and shows proposed tooth shapes over them, so that proportion, length and the line the edges follow can be discussed before anything is irreversible. It is genuinely useful and it is the reason we do it first rather than last.
What it is not is a rendering of the finished result. Porcelain is translucent and picks up the colour of the tooth underneath and the light in the room, gums recede or swell slightly around new margins, and a photograph flattens depth that the eye sees. We treat the preview as an agreement about direction, and the wax try-in and the temporaries as the two later chances to change it. Nobody can promise a specific final appearance in advance, and any clinic that does is describing a picture rather than a mouth.
- Brush and floss normally. The margin where porcelain meets tooth is where decay starts, and it is reached with floss rather than with a brush.
- A night guard if you grind. Grinding is the most common reason new porcelain fails early, and a guard costs a fraction of a remake.
- Do not open packaging, bite nails or crack anything with the front teeth. Porcelain is strong in compression and brittle against a point load.
- Expect whitening to be needed before, not after. Porcelain does not change colour with whitening gel, so the natural teeth are brought to the target shade first and the porcelain is matched to it.
- Keep six monthly check-ups. Margins and gum levels are checked, and a small chip caught early can often be polished rather than remade.
- Brush with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and floss daily, including along the edge of veneers and crowns.
- Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pen caps or fingernails, and use a night guard if you grind.
- Limit strongly staining drinks for 48 hours after whitening. Top-up treatments extend the result later.
- Keep six-monthly check-ups and polishing so the margins of the restorations stay clean.

The veneers themselves typically last 10 to 15 years with care before they need replacing. A veneer covers only the front surface and suits teeth that are sound but discoloured, chipped or slightly misshapen. A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when the tooth is weakened by large fillings, cracks or root canal treatment. Many makeovers use both.
