Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable appliance made to fit your gums. A partial denture fills gaps between remaining teeth. A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an arch. The teeth set in wax are tried in to check fit, bite, speech and appearance before the denture is finished.

The wax try-in is the visit that matters. The teeth are still set in wax and can be moved, so the shade, the length and how much they support the lip are all changeable at that point and considerably harder afterwards. Bring someone whose opinion you trust.
What To Expect
Getting used to dentures
The practical things patients ask about.
The first two weeks
A new denture feels far too big, saliva increases and speech is affected. All three are the mouth adapting rather than the denture being wrong. Read aloud for a few minutes a day, which speeds the speech up more than anything else.
Weeks 3 to 6
Sore spots appear where the denture presses. These are normal and they are adjusted at review visits in a couple of minutes each. Eating gets easier as the tongue and cheeks learn to hold the denture in place, which is a skill rather than a fit.
Months 3 to 6
The denture feels like part of you and most foods are back. Where teeth were extracted first, the gum is still shrinking underneath and the fit loosens, which is why a first reline is common around this point.
Year one onwards
Gum and bone keep changing slowly for as long as the teeth are missing. A reline every couple of years and a remake every five to eight years is the normal pattern, not a sign anything has gone wrong.
Do not adjust a denture yourself with a file or a blade. A sore spot is relieved by removing a fraction of a millimetre in exactly the right place, and taking material off the wrong place cannot be undone. Leave the denture in for a few hours before a review visit even if it is sore, because the ulcer shows us precisely where to adjust and it disappears if the denture has been out all day.

The suction technique does not work for every lower jaw. It depends on the height of the ridge and the way the gum moves, which we assess before recommending it. Where a lower denture cannot be made stable by any of the three, two to four implants can be used to hold it in place instead, which is covered on the implant page.

Dentures replace one or more missing teeth (a partial denture) or all the teeth in an arch (a complete denture) for people who are not ready for, or not suited to, implants. Acrylic dentures are the conventional option and are easy to adjust and repair. Flexible dentures are lighter, have gum-coloured clasps and suit smaller partial dentures. Suction dentures are lower complete dentures made with a technique that can improve stability in suitable cases. The condition of the remaining teeth, the shape of the gums and your general health decide which type is recommended.
- Start with soft food cut small, and put food on both sides at once. A complete denture tips the moment you load one side only.
- Bite with the side teeth rather than the front ones for the first weeks. Front teeth on a complete denture lever the back of it downwards.
- Read aloud for a few minutes a day. Speech normally sorts itself out within one to two weeks and reading aloud shortens that.
- Expect a reduced sense of taste and temperature with an upper complete denture, because the palate is covered. This settles partly but not entirely.
- Take the denture out at night unless we have told you otherwise, clean it, and keep it in water so it does not dry and distort. Gums need the rest as much as the denture needs the clean.
The jaw bone under a denture shrinks steadily once the teeth are gone, quickly for the first six months after extractions and slowly thereafter for the rest of your life. The denture does not change shape, so the gap between the two grows and the denture loosens, rocks and starts to rub. A reline adds new material to the fitting surface to close that gap, which restores the fit without remaking the teeth, and it is the routine maintenance of a denture rather than a repair.
A crack or a broken tooth is usually repairable and often on the same day. What is not worth repairing is a denture that has been relined repeatedly, has worn teeth that no longer meet properly, or was made for a mouth that has since changed shape. Worn denture teeth are the quiet one, because they wear flat over years without anyone noticing, and a flat bite loads the gums badly and reduces the face height. Five to eight years is the usual working life.
Where a lower complete denture cannot be made stable by any of this, two implants can be used to hold it in place, which is a different treatment rather than a better denture.
- Remove them at night to rest the gums, and brush them with a soft brush and denture cleaner rather than toothpaste.
- Soak them overnight in water or a cleaning solution. Never in hot water or bleach.
- Brush your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth every day.
- Have the fit checked yearly. As the gums change, a reline every one to three years keeps the denture stable, and a new one is usually needed after five to eight years.
